Native American history abounds here at this unique park, where the Hopewell tribe built the Great Circle, the Octagon, and the Wright Earthworks between 1 AD and 400 AD. The site, which was considered sacred by the ancient Native Americans, consists of acres upon acres of earthen enclosures. No one knows for sure the exact meaning of the site, but there are several theories.

Take a guided tour of this captivating enclosure and find out the answers and theories behind it. Tours are offered on the first Friday of the month from April through December. Or you can visit and make use of the interpretive signs and map for a self-guided tour. Newark Earthworks is located at 455 Hebron Rd.

2. Hoback Park

Bring the gang and head out to this 20-acre park and play a game of softball on one of the five Little League fields. Or perhaps you’d like to shoot some hoops at the basketball court. The kids will have fun on the slides and swings as well. You can also take a walk along the South Fork Licking River. Are your kids interested in joining a Little League team? Inquire about the boys’ baseball of the girls’ softball leagues.

When everyone gets hungry, stop by one of the picnic areas. The park is located at 42 Dorsey Mill Rd. E.

3. Heath City Water Park

Kids and adults alike will have a blast riding the slides, tubing along the lazy river, and swimming at this water park, which has been in operation since 1971. A host of upgrades and renovations over the years have made it one of the most popular places for residents to visit. The park boasts an Olympic-size pool, a learning tank, two diving boards, a speed slide, two drop slides, and a high and long slide.

The park also offers swimming lessons. For more information, just visit their website, which also lists walk-in and membership rates. The park is open daily from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Plan on spending several hours here at 1287 Hebron Rd.
