Newark Earthworks

If you enjoy investigating the cultural heritage of Native Americans, then you will find the Newark Earthworks at 455 Hebron Rd, Newark. A series of earth structures built by the Hopewell Culture around 2,000 years ago, archaeologists believe from the layout that the mounds were created to aid the indigenous people in exploring the night sky.

Perhaps the most impressive of the series is the Great Circle Earthworks which span around 1,200 ft and are contained within a wall and surrounded by a moat. There are plans for the Earthworks to become a World Heritage Site, and there is a visitor center where you can get more information about the history behind the structures.

Ariel-Foundation Park Factory Ruins

For those who like interesting ruins, the Ariel-Foundation Park Factory Ruins are worth a visit. Around a 40-minute drive from Heath on the OH-13, the ruins are situated at 10 Pittsburgh Ave, Mt Vernon. The building that now sits as a ruin was once an old glass factory and was preserved as a testament to the area’s industrial heritage.

The ruins themselves consist of two standing elevator towers and an extensive brick facade set against a series of lakes and a rolling park landscape. A sculpture park and observation tower are on the site, so you might want to load a picnic into the back of your Hyundai Elantra and make an afternoon of your trip.

Victoria Woodhull Clock

The Victoria Woodhull Clock is one of the most interesting historical memorials in the area. Situated at 221 E Broadway, Granville, about a 15-minute drive away via the Newark Granville Rd, the clock is part of what is now the Robbins-Hunter Museum and is dedicated to Victoria Woodhull, the first woman to run for President in 1872.

The clock itself features a figurine of Woodhull that slides out onto a balcony, accompanied by music, on the hour. Above the balcony hangs a large bell, and on top of this is the clock face.

Longaberger Basket Building

One of the most unique buildings in Ohio is the Longaberger Basket Building. Constructed in the shape of a woven basket with huge handles protruding from the roof, the building is located at 1500 E Main St, Newark, a 10-minute drive via the OH-19 N and OH-16 E.

Originally built in the 1990s, the building fell into disuse with the demise of the company. It was given a new life in 2019 with plans to turn it into a hotel as well as being proposed for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Buildings.
