Transmission problems are a nightmare for any driver. Most drivers believe that any transmission problem is expensive and time-consuming to fix. Your transmission, however, will always show signs it’s in trouble. The sooner your Hyundai dealer can perform a transmission repair, the cheaper and easier the problem is to fix. These are a few of the signs of transmission problems.

Signs You Need a Transmission Repair at Your Hyundai Dealer

Burning Rubber Smell

Burning rubber is an awful smell. It’s even worse if it’s coming from your transmission. The smell means that you have burnt transmission fluid. Transmission fluid circulates through your transmission and provides several major benefits. The fluid produces the hydraulic power used to shift your transmission’s gears. It also lubricates and provides a friction-resistant coating on all the transmission components.

Transmission fluid needs to be replaced regularly according to your car’s service schedule. The older fluid becomes thicker and sluggish and loses its heat-resistant properties. The transmission heat can cause the fluid to burn, and burnt fluid doesn’t provide hydraulic power for your gears. We’ll flush your transmission to remove the burnt fluid and then refill it.

Buzzing Noises

A strange buzzing sound from your transmission is a clue that all is not well. Your transmission shouldn’t make a sound as it shifts, so any noise represents a possible problem. When this noise starts, it’s almost imperceptible. As time passes, it will become louder and can turn into an annoying whining or humming noise. There are several possible causes for the sounds, but the most common is a lack of transmission fluid.

Transmission fluid, as we’ve seen, performs a variety of functions. It also operates in a closed-loop system. A lack of fluid is a clear sign that your transmission leaks. Fluid can leak from the transmission pan, the transmission gasket, or a damaged transmission casing. Our technicians will find the cause of the leak and repair it.

Slipping Gears

A well-maintained transmission will shift only on the instructions of your transmission computer. The transmission will stay in its assigned gear until the computer shifts it again. Gear slipping is very dangerous as your transmission will shift gears without warning. Unexpectedly, your transmission will move into its previous gear. It could, for example, shift from drive to park without warning.

The sudden forced movement of the gears can cause damage to the gear teeth and other transmission components. The unexpected shifting also means you don’t have control over your car. If this happens, we advise stopping ASAP and calling our service department. Our highly-trained technicians will investigate the problem and repair it.

If your transmission shows signs of a problem, call us immediately at Coughlin Hyundai of Heath.
