When you’re living in Heath, OH and looking for some fun, you don’t have to make the drive to Columbus! You can stay in town to learn about the area’s interesting history or see some beautiful natural scenery nearby. Here are some of our favorite local attractions!

1. The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art, and Technology

Learning can be fun for the whole family when you head over to this unique museum! Here, various interactive exhibits help to educate visitors about Ohio’s history and the sciences. One floor covers history from the culture of the Paleo-Indians to the modern era, including an exhibit about Jerrie Mock—the first woman to fly solo around the world. Kids will love building their own race car and experimenting with electricity as they explore the first floor’s labs.

The Works even features a full-fledged glassblowing shop that lets visitors create their own works of art under the supervision of experienced professionals.

2. Newark Earthworks

Centuries before European-Americans arrived, the people of the Hopewell tradition held social gatherings and religious ceremonies here. They also left behind one of the largest geometric earthen enclosures ever discovered, which hosted many of these events. The National Historic Landmark-designated site lets visitors go on guided and self-guided tours with the help of detailed informational signage.

At a diameter of 1,200 feet, the Great Circle is the largest earthwork on these grounds and features a large moat encompassed by 8-foot-tall walls. Archaeologists have concluded that this structure was used by the Hopewells for their own scientific studies. The exact purposes of other structures, however, remain a mystery.

3. Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve

Located about a 20-minute drive away, this 956-acre nature preserve is named for the impressive sandstone formation that was carved out by the Licking River. Along with lush populations of Virginia pine, mountain laurel, and hickory, the park is home to a wide variety of wildlife. It’s an especially great spot for bird watching, as you may encounter herons, woodpeckers, ospreys, and owls.

Since Blackhand Gorge features some of the best kayaking and biking trails in the state, you’ll definitely want to make use of your Hyundai Palisade’s versatile roof rails!

4. Buckeye Lake Museum

Focusing on the history of the Licking, Fairfield, and Perry counties, the Great Buckeye Lake Historical Society has preserved countless artifacts and memorabilia. Notable items include a rocket car from the Buckeye Lake Amusement Park, an old-fashioned Skee-Ball machine, and the intricate stained glass that was saved from the old church on Millersport’s Main Street before it was demolished.

You can also hop aboard the Queen of the Lake III and take a tour of the area surrounding Buckeye Lake.
